Throwback Thursday- Jamine Guy- Try Me
Of course, Whitley Gilbert had a singing career….Didn’t everybody, back then? I equate her singing career with that of her School Daze co-star, Tisha Campbell’s. Both can sing well, but it was just too hard for audiences to separate them from their wildly-popular TV counterparts. That being said, I’m not altogether sold on the idea that either of their voices could actually carry a full-fledged R&B career. I’m just saying……Unfortunately for Jasmine Guy, it was hard to separate her one and only hit (if you can call it that) from anything else that came out around that same time. Without even thinking about it, you can tell this tune was clearly from the early 90’s. If you were alive and paying attention to music back then, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Insert a hard New Jack Swing beat here, with a Teddy Riley or Full Force production there, and you’ve pretty much got every R&B song released between 1988-1991. Side note: Guy’s “A Different World” co-star, Cree Summer provided background vocals on the album. “Try Me” was the first single from Guy’s self-titled debut album.
Enjoy this trip in time back to October 1990….
