Discussion of the Week: Who's The Best Female MC of All Time?

Happy Tuesday Musicheads! I know, that given recent controversy, popular opinion would give the title of “Best Female Rapper” to either Nicki Minaj or Remy Ma, but neither of which could actually be further from the truth. Let’s keep it real, this 'so-called' beef is so "mainstream" that it wouldn't qualify as a real, bonafide rap battle. First of all, I know 2nd graders who could rhyme better than Nicki, so there’s no competition there; and Secondly, while Remy Ma has talent and flow, shETHER felt more like a 7 minute long rant, rather than a clever play on words to eviscerate her opponent….and no one is talking about the fact that she couldn’t even come up with her own beat for her diss record. But it’s still exponentially better than anything Nicki has ever put out.

When talking about The Best Female MC’s of all time, the only names that should come out of one’s mouth are the following:

Minus Brandy, of course. Each of these lyricists spent albums empowering and educating the masses. They recognized that they had the ears of a generation, and used their platform to speak on topics relevant to the community.

That being said, I would be remiss if I didn’t give special mention being given to these ladies right here:

Note, I didn’t mention Kim or Foxy in this list. While they are both influential….no question… I can’t (in good conscience) put either one of them at the top of the food chain. Legend has it that Foxy copied off Kim, and we all know Kim only had one subject to rhyme about. Now if you don’t know what that subject is….go listen to one of her albums, and see what I’m talking about. After all, I run a respectable blog here.

So who’s on your “Heavy Hitters” list for Best Female MC’s of all time? Join in on the conversation on Twitter, or sound off in the comments below.
