Discussion of the Week: How Do You Consume Music? Digitally or Online?
Happy Monday, Musicheads! NEWSFLASH: If you still appreciate the value of an MP3 as much as I do, Congratulations…...You are officially a RELIC!! Chances are you are more than likely a member of the 35-plus crowd, that grew up being able to buy tangible music from a physical record store.
Record stores, remember those?
As for me, I grew up a Cassette-Head, in all its 8-10 track glory; Who was then FORCED to convert to CD’s (simply because they stopped making most albums on Cassette by 2002). Then I discovered the “Wonderful, Wide World of MP3’s” (Morpheus, Limewire, anyone?); until later in life, where I found the great YouTube to MP3 conversion (or how I completely lost my damn mind and went AWOL for 4 years). Then suddenly, rationally, I came across the beauty of streaming.
This, Ladies and Gentleman, has been the evolution of my music consumption….
I’ve been on Spotify for about 4 years now, and it’s a Godsend. See I’m a Music Geek- and that means that I don’t just settle for what’s hot, or the most popular singles. I need to get all “up-close and personal” in a musician/singer’s discography. I wanna see their evolution as an artist from beginning to present; I wanna be able to HEAR what drives and motivates them, come out in their music. That’s why I love streaming so much.
However…..
Let’s keep it gully……I AM an old-head. So there’s just something about being able to access my music at the drop of a dime; because it’s saved onto a hard drive, that I can see and touch with my hands. If a song has been deleted, I’ll know cause I’m the one that deleted it. And therein, lies my only problem with streaming- the site can delete music from your library, and if you have a ton of songs, you wouldn’t even know it. This happened to me when Tidal came out, and suddenly all my favorite Jay Z songs were ripped away from Spotify without my knowledge….
Guess I’ll have to spend another $10 a month if I wanna listen to “Hard Knock Life” anytime soon.
