Discussion of the Week: Do You Think That Artists Should Be Separated From Their Art?
I'm gonna go on record and say that most popular musicians are a**holes.....Yup, you heard me correctly. Perfect example....One of my favorite musicians, Eric Clapton made a drunken, racist
statement at a rally back in the 70's. He basically said to "Keep the Blacks out of Britain; and to Keep Britain White." Stupid?.....Absolutely....There's no questioning that. He still remains one of my favorite artists, however. See, I don't look for artists to be role models...I know better. Just because a person is constantly in the public eye, doesn't mean that they are "the sharpest bulb in the knife drawer." It certainly doesn't mean that they will possess any iota wisdom beyond their years. You watch any Behind The Music episode to know that. What's even more interesting is that musicians are shamed by the public into apologizing after the fact....as if you can actually retract a statement that has already been documented, and published. People say what they mean, and if he didn't feel that way, he wouldn't have said it in the 1st place. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not in any way condoning what he said....but the music is what matters most to me. How a artist's music makes me feel is what becomes the deciding factor as to whether or not I listen to them- not whether or not I agree with their political statements. But that's only me....
