Discussion of the Week: What Are Some Of Your Favorite Instrumental Riffs/Solos?
When I first heard this tune as a teenager, I was blown away.....That saxophone riff came blaring through my speakers, and I was immediately hooked.....For years afterwards, I desperately searched for this songeverywhere in an effort to add to my ever-growing music collection, but alas, I was screwed..... because it suddenly dawned on me that......."I didn't know the name of the song........... Or any of the lyrics, for that matter".... and anyone that I would try to hum it to, looked at me like a blithering idiot. I had only heard it once or twice, but the one thing that always stuck with me was that saxophone solo.... Now keep in mind, this is a pre- You-Tube, pre-Shazaam world, so it wasn't nearly as easy to find music as it is now....you had to rely on the the modern wonders of "Morpheus" and "Kazaa" to satisfy your dreams of musical dominance (or at least mine).
It wasn't until a chance conversation with my future Mother-In-Law, being the music whiz that she is, that I played the tune on my keyboard over the phone....and she easily replied, "Oh that's Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty." She had no idea the amount of relief that answer was to a music geek, like myself. I just had to know....Hell, had it not been for her, I probably still wouldn't have known what the name of that damn song was.
So I ask of you: What Are Some Of Your Favorite Instrumental Riffs/Solos? I'm anxious to hear what some of your answers are. Let me know by sounding of in the comments.
Until Next Time.........
