Throwback Thursday- Tasmin Archer
Happy Throwback Thursday, Musicheads! Most people don’t know the name of the song, or artist by name- but if you were around in 1992, trust me, you more than likely know the song. Tasmin Archer’s “Sleeping Satellite” was an anthem criticizing the effects of space exploration on the Planet Earth, as we know it. I always thought that this song was so ahead of its time. Not only did it sound like something that came out in the latter half of the decade, versus the earlier; but also in terms of content. Remember this was 1992, people were just starting to talk about the Ozone Layer and taking care of Planet Earth. Folks were just starting to realize that maybe we should start taking care of our home so that it will be around for fortune generations. Before the early 90’s, no one really cared about that kind of stuff……I don’t know about you, but I don’t remember hearing anything about the word “recycle” in the 80’s.
In the song, she questions what the point of the “Great Space Race” in the 60’s anyhow? And do we have bigger troubles down here as a result of it…… Makes you think, doesn’t it? The song was an international hit, climbing up the charts on both sides of the Atlantic by Feb 1993. Archer, a primarily UK artist, released other albums overseas after 1992’s Great Expectations, but they never saw the same success as that of her debut.
Enjoy this trip back in time to August 1992.
