Throwback Thursday- Dru Hill: These Are The Times
Oh yeah….this one brings back memories. It was Fall of ’98….My sophomore year in high school, and this song was all over the radio. When’s the last time you heard an R&B group do a ballad? Ill wait…….I know, by today’s standards, it’s practically unheard of….But if you ask me, Dru Hill was the last of the great Male R&B Groups….Yeah, I said it….Who else did we really have to come after them, "Day 26?" Come on, now….Even with Sisqo’s signature “Yeaaaaah-ahy-yeah” through EACH and EVERY one of their songs….they still smoked any Male R&B group that came out after them (I know that’s a pretty small number).
Not only was the song classy, but the video for it, even had the nerve to be too ……The Man in the Iron Mask! Who puts that much thought and effort into videos anymore? Back in the 90’s, you hadn’t arrived if your video wasn’t directed by Hype Williams, F. Gary Gray, or Billie Woodruff (this one was done by the latter of the 3). Not to mention, this song actually spoke of a foreign concept called “True Love.” Now take note, youngins…..This song was talking about NOT rushing to jump in the sack......Can you believe that? When’s the last time you heard a song speak of anything other than “bumpin uglies” in the quickest manner possible? But I digress….
Enjoy this trip back in time to December 1998…..
