Discussion of the Week: Name An Artist That You've Been Following Since The Start of Their Career
There are certain artists that just put you on notice from the moment you first hear them. It could be something about the song they’re singing that resonates with you…..That wasn’t the case with Jazmine Sullivan. Her 1st single “Need You Bad” from 2008’s Fearless was okayyy, but I felt that it was safe, and limited her vocally. The song itself didn't really stand out to me. Even then, there was something that I could hear in her voice that told me that she was capable of reaching so many other dimensions vocally…….and then came the 2nd single.....“Bust Your Windows” could easily be mistaken as your regular man-bashing anthem, but if you listen closely, it really is so much more than that….To this day, it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up whenever I hear it. First of all, it’s a really well-written song, which is a testament to Sullivan herself as the songwriter. The vibe & the feel of the tune, always reminded me more of a Country song rather than R&B because of its blatant, in-your-face honesty. There’s also something about Sullivan’s delivery of the song that makes it so poignant. You hear the strength, the pain, and the resilience, all rolled into one. There’s not alot of artists who could pull off that myriad of emotions in one song, and then have a mainstream hit result from it. From this point, I knew she was one to keep on my radar…..and I haven’t been disappointed yet….
