Discussion of the Week: What Type Of Music Are You Passing On To The Next Generation?
It's up to us people! We are the ones who are responsible for making sure that the next generation knows what the meaning of good music is....I love to see how music affects people of all ages, but I especially get a kick out of seeing how kids react to it. As young children, they don't know or care about the difference between what's trendy and what's not. They judge by how it sounds, and in turn, how it makes them feel. To me, there's no more honest truth than that.......As kids get older, and get influenced by both outside forces and the media, they get force-fed a pre-conceived notion of what record companies think that you "should" be listening to. If the media and music stations say that a particular artist is the "next big thing," then guess what....They are. Unfortunately, whether said artist deserves to be considered as such- based on their message and lyrical content- is completely overlooked and ignored.
It is up to us as parents to not only monitor the stuff that our children are listening to, but to also teach them to think for themselves in every aspect of their lives. I'm all for exposing kids to different types of music at an early age....as long as it is deemed age-appropriate. My oldest son, Jaesyn can say that from an early age, he's grown up with music all around him. The first song he knew how to sing was "Hold The Line" by Toto, and he's known the majority of The Beatles' catalog since the age of 4.....after all, look who his mom is. Sure, he likes some of the contemporary stuff too, but compared to other kids his age, he has a much more well-rounded view of the different types of music that are out there.
So I ask you, "What Type of Music Are You Passing On To The Next Generation?" Sound off in the comments, and let me know what you think..
